My Current Top 5 Makeup Products

I don’t wear a lot of makeup but I do wear it everyday. I’ve experimented with different brands and different products but I think I’ve finally found what works for me. Maybe some of these will work for you too!

I. Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation – $5.99 -$7.99 (depending on retailer)

It was so difficult for me to find a foundation that actually matched my skin tone and didn’t leave me looking either orange or grey. I scoured Sephora, tried my hand at highly-regarded brands and even tried mixing shades, all to no avail. It turns out that my my perfect foundation shade was waiting for me at Walmart for $5.99! I’ve been using the Fit Me Matte + Poreless foundation since September 2018 and it’s been just what I was looking for.

The foundation dries on matte so it lasts throughout the day. I notice myself getting oily after a few hours so I usually just blot my face with some facial tissues and carry on. Some people might opt to use a primer first or to set their faces after foundation but I literally put it on and head out. Though it isn’t entirely full coverage on first application (especially if you have dark spots like I do), it is buildable, so you can add more product as you need. In case you were wondering, I wear the shade 360 (Mocha).

Tip: Buy it on Amazon or at Walmart. It’s cheaper than buying it on the Maybelline website.

II. Fenty Glow Gloss Bomb – $18

When I feel a little bit fancy or I just want an extra shimmer, I use Rihanna’s Fenty Glow Gloss Bomb lip gloss. It is pretty thick so a little definitely goes a long way! I tend to use my lip balm as a base and then follow it up with the gloss just to make sure that my lips stay hydrated underneath.

The gloss looks rose gold and seems to work on any skin tone unlike certain types of lip products. The color is subtle enough for a makeup wearer like me to feel comfortable with that extra shimmer on my lips.

If I’m being honest, I’ve experimented with putting the gel on my eyelids as a cream shadow and on my cheeks as a highlighter. If you’re looking for an editorial dewy look, then that method could work for you.

Tip: Check your lips after a few hours because sometimes lip glosses give you a strange white film on the inner parts of your lips.

III. NYX Control Freak Eyebrow Gel – $6

I realized that I don’t particularly like filling in my brows but I do like to maintain their shape throughout the day. NYX’s brow gel is really light so it doesn’t flake throughout the day which is very important to me. No one wants to look like they just walked through the snow eyebrow-first. There really isn’t much to say about the gel except that it works to keep my eyebrows in place until I get home and remove my makeup. I got it in clear so I can also use it after filling in my eyebrows on days when I decide to do so.

The thing I love about NYX is that they have some great products at an affordable price, which – as a college student – I’m always happy to hear.

Tip: I’m pretty sure you can buy it cheaper on Ulta Beauty’s website. That’s where I got it.

IV. Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Waterproof Mascara – $7.77

The only eye makeup I wear on a daily basis is mascara, so I wanted to find one that would really work for my lashes and last throughout the day. I never re-apply my makeup during the day.

The beauty about this mascara is that it really is waterproof, so I never find that it’s smudged and left me looking like a disgruntled racoon. I also found that there was no need for me to curl my eyelashes beforehand. I just put it on and go.

Tip: Curl your eyelashes for an even more dramatic mascara look. Begin applying it from the base and shake your spooly in an upwards motion to spread the product evenly along your lashes.

V. MAC Powder Blush in Raizin – $24

This is the blush that I stole from my mother which is why it’s the most expensive thing on my list. As a black woman, it can be really difficult to find shades of makeup that suit our skin tones, so any time I do find a product that works for me, I hold onto it.

The blush is buildable so I can start with a little bit on days when I want a natural look and then add more depending on how dramatic I want my blush to be that day.

Tip: Make your money stretch further by using the blush as an eyeshadow as well.

This is my everyday makeup look at the moment.
