Black and Brown Representation on TV: Who I Think is Doing It Right
Growing up, it didn’t click that there weren’t many Disney shows that featured black leads in non-stereotypical roles. Off the top of my head, I can think of That’s So Raven, Cory in the House, and later, Shake It Up!, but I was already too old for that. As I’ve gotten older, the conversation surrounding the demand for better representation of all people of color has gotten louder, and that is really going to change the way young children of color see themselves in society. I decided to highlight a few recent shows I’ve watched which I think are doing a good job of representing black and brown folks. I.…

My Favorite Buildings In Chapel Hill
I am becoming increasingly nostalgic as I enter the final month of my undergraduate career. As a result, I thought that it’d be nice to dedicate a post to some of my favorite buildings in Chapel Hill. I. Carroll Hall Carroll is the building that makes me wonder why I pay rent. As the home of the School of Media and Journalism, it’s become my sanctuary. The majority of my classes (and my only all-nighters) have taken place somewhere within its walls during my time at UNC-Chapel Hill. The building is a tad bit confusing to navigate, but I’ve become an expert at finding short cuts, knowing the best times…

My Current Top 5 Makeup Products
I don’t wear a lot of makeup but I do wear it everyday. I’ve experimented with different brands and different products but I think I’ve finally found what works for me. Maybe some of these will work for you too! I. Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation – $5.99 -$7.99 (depending on retailer) It was so difficult for me to find a foundation that actually matched my skin tone and didn’t leave me looking either orange or grey. I scoured Sephora, tried my hand at highly-regarded brands and even tried mixing shades, all to no avail. It turns out that my my perfect foundation shade was waiting for me…

5 Reasons To Use Airbnb When Traveling
In case you’ve never heard of it before, Airbnb is a lodging reservation website on which home owners can list their spaces and “match” with travelers who are looking for a place to stay. The site currently has over 2 million home listings all over the world! I’ve used Airbnb six times now – including a 3-month-long stint in New York City – and I have 2 more upcoming trips already planned. I’ve become such a fan of the site because of how easy it is to use. I’m also lucky enough to have never had a bad experience with any of my listings. Below are a few reasons why…

For the people who don’t want to watch the Bachelor but want to know what’s going on.
Because no matter how cringey the majority of the moments are on shows like this, we’re still suckers for a romantic plot line. Entertainment Tonight made Bachelor Nation’s dreams come true when they decided to create a Bachelor franchise recap show called Roses and Rosé. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill recap show – it’s the funniest and most wildly entertaining collection of footage and commentary that I’ve ever come across. I don’t know the science behind YouTube’s algorithms but for some unknown reason, Roses and Rosé was recommended to me. (Prior to finding the show, I was by no means an avid Bachelor watcher). Perhaps the engineers at YouTube HQ thought…

You Call It “Being Nosy.” I Call It “Being Curious.”
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always taken an interest in the lives of others. The main reason I learned my mother tongue was to be able to understand what my parents were saying about other people during our car rides. I was six…and they were shocked. My sneaky life-givers then moved on to using code names and ambiguities in their conversations so that I wouldn’t understand what they were saying. Though it was harder, I decoded each one, and would occasionally slip up by asking why it is that “so-and-so” did “such-and-such.” I remember that I was eight years old when I cracked a pretty complex code…

My Big Obsession with Tiny Homes
There is something intriguing about being able to build a home that is cute, affordable and eco-friendly. I first became interested in tiny homes when I decided to entertain my mother’s idea about watching HGTV’s “Tiny House, Big Living.” She is obsessed with home and garden design shows and has done everything in her power to get me to follow suit. In the summer of 2018, she finally succeeded. Together, my mother and I watched countless episodes of people searching for the perfect tiny homes across the US. Some of them were less-than-ideal, with cramped spaces and no storage (that’s a no from me, dawg). But others were fantastic, boasting…

Friendships: Expectations vs. Reality
I’ve made and lost friends over the years. I’m sure we all have. All my experiences have led me to better understand the kind of friend that I am and the kind of friends that I want to have. Today’s post is all about challenging the expectations we have about how friendships are going to be and accepting the ways that they often are. People are complicated, so nothing is ever straightforward, and that’s totally okay. Expectation #1 : We’re going to be friends forever! Reality: The good news is that this is actually possible, but it doesn’t just happen. People change, so in order to stay friends with someone…

Why Netflix’s “Sex Education” is Actually Educational
Sex Education is the current craze of the Netflix world, starring Asa Butterfield, Ncuti Gatwa and Emma Mackey. It’s a British TV show set around the life of 16-year-old Otis Milburn who’s mother is a sex therapist. Using the tips and tricks he’s picked up along the way, Otis starts up a sex therapy clinic for students at his school with the help of resident “bad girl,” Maeve Wiley. Everyone at the school is between the ages of 16 and 18, and they’re all going through some major (and awkward) life changes. The story – in a hilarious and slightly uncomfortable way – goes through the whole process of learning…
